Getting started

Initial setup of Portfolio Manager

A short introduction to importing transactions and creating your first portfolio.

Portfolio Manager brings all your accounts, transactions, and investments together in one place. This guide walks you through the most important steps so you can get up and running quickly.

Import transactions

The first thing you need to do is get your accounts and transactions into Portfolio Manager. For supported platforms (Nordnet, Saxo Bank, Bitstamp) accounts are created automatically during the import or integration setup. If your broker is not supported, you can create accounts by hand and enter transactions manually.

How you import data depends on which trading platform you use.

Importing data from Nordnet

To import data from Nordnet you first need to export your transactions as a CSV file.

Log in to Nordnet and go to My Pages | Account overview | Transactions. In the top-left corner you can see which account or accounts are currently selected. Click the circle and choose All accounts to get a combined export.

Select a date range long enough to capture all your transactions — this is important for an accurate history and a correct current balance. Click Export and save the file to your computer.

In Portfolio Manager, go to Accounts and click Import statement. Select the file you just downloaded and follow the on-screen instructions to import the data.

Importing data from Saxo Bank

Data from Saxo Bank is fetched via their API. To give Portfolio Manager access, you first need to enable Open API access for your Saxo Bank account. Do this by logging in to Saxo Bank (Saxo Trader), going to 👤 | Other | OpenAPI access, and switching it on.

Once you have activated the Open API, go to Portfolio Manager and sign in to Saxo Bank from there. Click the Saxo Bank icon in the top-right corner and follow the prompts to log in and grant Portfolio Manager access to your data.

Portfolio Manager can now fetch instruments and prices from Saxo Bank for as long as you are signed in.

To also have your accounts and transactions imported and kept in sync, go to Settings and click Add integration. Select Saxo Bank and follow the instructions to authorise Portfolio Manager to access your accounts and transactions.

After completing that step, Portfolio Manager will automatically fetch your transactions and update your holdings and history every time you sign in to Saxo Bank via Portfolio Manager.

Importing data from Bitstamp

Data from Bitstamp is fetched via their API. To connect Portfolio Manager, you first need to create an API key in your Bitstamp account. Log in to Bitstamp, go to Account | Security | API access, and create a new key with permission to read account balances and transaction history. Copy both the key and the secret — the secret is only shown once.

In Portfolio Manager, go to Settings and click Add Integration. Select Bitstamp and enter the API key and secret.

Once the integration is set up, Portfolio Manager will sync your transactions every night and automatically create an account for each currency held in your Bitstamp wallet. Live cryptocurrency rates are fetched from Bitstamp twice daily and used to value your holdings in the portfolio.

Create your first portfolio

In Portfolio Manager a portfolio is defined as a collection of accounts. An account can belong to more than one portfolio, so you can, for example, define one portfolio for your pension accounts, another for your regular investment accounts, and a third that gives a combined overview of everything.

Once you have created a portfolio and attached accounts to it, Portfolio Manager will automatically recalculate its holdings and history whenever you import new transactions. While recalculation is in progress, a Recalculating… label appears next to the portfolio name. You can monitor background tasks in the Tasks view.

When the recalculation is complete you will be able to see your holdings and history in the portfolio.

Asset groups

You can group the assets in your portfolio by selecting one or more assets, right-clicking, choosing Move to group, and then picking an existing group or creating a new one.

This lets you see your holdings and history grouped in a way that makes sense to you — for example, by sector for your equities, or by issuer for your bonds.

Once you have created the groups you want, you can also use drag-and-drop to move assets between groups and to order them in any way you like.

You can set a rebalancing weight on each group. The overview will then show how much you need to buy or sell of each asset to reach the target allocation.

Portfolio perspectives

You can look at your portfolio from different angles — for example:

  • Asset classes
  • Sectors
  • Geography

Each angle requires a different grouping of assets, so Portfolio Manager lets you create multiple perspectives and group your assets differently in each one.

Perspectives appear as tabs in the portfolio view. By default there is one perspective, but you can add more by clicking the + button next to the tabs.

Once you have more than one perspective, you can drag-and-drop the tabs into the order that works best for you. You can also rename, copy, or delete a perspective by right-clicking its tab and choosing the action you want.
